Wal-Martian Invasion
The article “Wal-Martian Invasion” was written by American feminist and democratic socialist Barbara Ehrenreich. It was originally published on July 7, 2004 by the Baltimore Sun. The Baltimore Sun generally takes a liberal stance on most issues; as is the case with most newspapers/magazines Ehrenreich has written for, such as The Progressive, New York Times, Mother Jones, and Z Magazine. Obviously the article was meant to target the Liberal population. The audience could be intended for anyone 18 and up. The language in this article is very sarcastic and dry, and advanced wording is used. It is something that would be understood and appreciated by adults of most ages, but not the young teenage demographic. It can also be argued that Ehrenreich’s feminism played a large role in how she wrote the article. This is apparent when she specifically includes statements such as “Wal-Mart is facing class-action lawsuits over sex discrimination”, and a quote from a fellow female activist, Madeline Janis-Aparicio, who led a successful fight against a new superstore in Inglewood.
